The outlook for the oil and natural gas sector reflects the fact that, while the recession derailed a major global energy crisis, the train is now back on the tracks. In this article we look at the investment case for the sector in the context of constrained government spending in the Western world, emerging market growth and competition from other energy resources.

Having stepped off the rollercoaster that saw the price of oil rise to $145 per barrel in July 2008, before crashing back to $31 per barrel that December, we have entered a period of relative stability, with the price having hovered above $70 per barrel for a year.
